Last weekend was a straight-up blast! The Saturday AM team packed up and made their way to the Big Apple for Anime NYC 2025.

We rolled in with the dream team: Morganne Walker, JR De Bard, Whyt Manga, Raymond Brown, Austin Harvey-Younis, and of course, CEO Frederick L. Jones.

Saturday AM Booth & Big Announcements

We set up shop with our own booth stacked with books, exclusive prints, custom art from our creators, and a sneak peek at our upcoming video game with SON STUDIOS: Battle Manga.

And if that wasn’t enough, we dropped a bombshell announcement about the voice cast for our heroes: Anairis Quiñones as Cast from Clock Striker and Alejandro Saab as Sano from Apple Black.

We even shared details on how YOU can audition to become a voice actor for one of our heroes!

We’re cooking with fire here and can’t wait to reveal more about the game, including our upcoming roster of in-game characters. Stay tuned!

Sponsoring the American Manga Awards 2025

That was just one highlight of the weekend. Saturday AM was proud to be a sponsor of the American Manga Awards 2025. With JR De Bard’s recent win, this sponsorship carried extra meaning for us and our community.

The Release of Making Manga

We didn’t stop there! Fans at Anime NYC got exclusive deals, including the release of our long-awaited sequel to How to Draw Diverse Manga.

Our new book, Making Manga: The Saturday AM Way, features contributions from top creators like Whyt Manga, JR De Bard, Fred Tornager, and Issaka Galadima. Inside, we dive into topics like black hairstyles and facial features, representing different body types, and respectfully creating diverse character designs.

But that’s just the start. Making Manga continues our mission of providing fresh perspectives from global manga creators and industry pros.

What’s Inside Making Manga

Aside from step-by-step guides, the book gives detailed breakdowns of constructing page layouts, pitching your manga, printing your manga, developing your story, and even completing a manga from start to finish with insights from Clock Striker and Apple Black.

You’ll also find exclusive interviews with printers, distributors, librarians, comic book professionals, journalists, and more. If you’re an aspiring mangaka looking for a “How To” book that’s real, diverse, and professional — you need to check out Making Manga: The Saturday AM Way.

Battle Manga Panel with Frederick L. Jones

The man himself, Frederick L. Jones, also hosted a panel diving deep into our upcoming Battle Manga game. The excitement in the room was unreal — and yes, the game is headed to consoles near you!

Check out the video of the panel below:

What the Team Had to Say

The entire team couldn’t have been happier with Anime NYC 2025, and they had plenty to share about their experience.

“Our best show to date! New York was spectacular, can’t wait to return.”
— Whyt Manga

“The show felt like a family reunion of sorts. Seeing my AM family again and the fans was awesome. Can’t wait for the next show.”
Raymond Brown

“It was an absolute pleasure to see all the fans—new and old—excited to see Saturday AM! I hope to do it again with our amazing team in the future!”
Austin Harvey-Younis

“After a decade, it never ceases to amaze us that our fans—like our team and our manga heroes—come in every size, skin color, and cultural background. New York is truly a second home for the World’s MOST DIVERSE MANGA brand and it was an honor to return with so many manga, our video game announcement, prints, and a sneak peek of our upcoming title.”
Frederick L. Jones

“Always a blast seeing my Saturday AM family and meeting our fans in the amazing New York City! Anime NYC was not only a fun adventure but a testament to what we do and how we continue to impact the industry!”
Morganne Walker

“Having met the Saturday AM crew at Anime NYC in 2017, it was so cool getting to be on the other side of the table! We saw so much support this year, it was crazy! Can’t wait for next time. WE LOVE YOU NEW YORK!”
JR De Bard

Until Next Time, New York

A big shoutout to our team for coming together and making this weekend such a huge success. We know these kinds of events are no small feat, and we couldn’t have done it without the hard work of our creators, staff, and supporters.

San Diego Comic-Con has officially kicked off, and we couldn’t be more excited! The annual epicenter of all things pop culture and fandom has returned in full force, and this year, we had none other than Whyt Manga representing Saturday AM on the front lines.

While major announcements like Avatar: The Seven Havens and a brand-new Rick and Morty spin-off grabbed headlines, we’re here to talk about — Whyt Manga’s appearances at not one, but TWO panels during this mega convention for anime, comics, manga, and beyond.

Panel 1: From Page to Pixel – Legendary Comics for a New Generation on WEBTOON

Hosted by WEBTOON, this insightful panel brought together some of the biggest names in the publishing world to discuss how legendary comic publishers are adapting their stories for a digital-first audience. The discussion featured Quinn Sonsa-Spears, executive producer at WEBTOON, alongside Ethan LeBlanc, WEBTOON’s managing editor. They were joined by Bixie Mathieu, associate editor at IDW, and Cara O’Neil, VP of marketing at Dark Horse Comics. Representing Saturday AM, Whyt Manga shared his perspective as co-owner and creator of Apple Black, weighing in on the evolution of indie manga in a rapidly changing industry. The conversation was moderated by The Hollywood Reporter’s own Borys Kit and offered a compelling look into how digital platforms like WEBTOON are reshaping the comics landscape.

Panel 2: Graphic Novel vs. Manga (Presented by the Children’s Book Council)

This meet-and-greet panel brought together some of the biggest creators in both the graphic novel and manga spaces to discuss the evolution of the medium — and how today’s fans are shaping its future.

Whyt also held a book signing for Apple Black during the event, courtesy of Quarto — giving fans the chance to meet him face-to-face and get their volumes signed!

This past weekend was a real treat for fans in the Raleigh, NC area — several of the creative minds behind Saturday Wars assembled like the Super Friends for an unforgettable book signing across two Ultimate Comics locations.

Oh, and did we mention it was also opening weekend for Supaman?

Fans got to meet the powerhouse trio of Sweet Tooth Eddy, Whyt Manga, and Frederick L. Jones, who came together to sign books, chat with fans, and give away some awesome swag — including bookmarks, trading cards, and exclusive prints with every book purchase.

Here’s what the team had to say about their experience at Ultimate Comics and their journey working on Saturday Wars:

“North Carolina readers were great and very welcoming! It was a pleasure to sign the books of new readers as well as those who brought their copies to the event.”
– Whyt Manga

“Whatup whatup! Hope you all enjoy Saturday Wars. Sheesh, what a trip! One minute I’m chillin’, the next I’m drawing all of Saturday AM’s biggest characters in a multiverse crossover! It was a blast to hop in — especially getting to use my new 3D skills to speed things up.

I do wish we had more time, but deadlines are deadlines. It was actually lowkey fun to push myself and still keep the quality high. Learned a lot. From reading Garfield comics as a kid to becoming a published manga artist — wild!

Artists out there: don’t wait too long thinking you’ve gotta be perfect. Get on the grind and grow along the way. Oh — and save your files! Backup everything! Take care of your body too. Happy body, happy mind, more productivity.

Aight, I’m out. Peace!!”
– Sweet Tooth Eddy

Check out some highlights from the book signings below!

A huge thank you to Ultimate Comics for hosting this epic signing weekend. Be sure to keep an eye out for future events, and don’t forget to check out Saturday Wars, Apple Black, and Making Manga the Saturday AM Way!

Did you hear the news? The annual “Draw Your Own Little Manga” Doujinshi Competition at DoKomi just wrapped up—and we’re thrilled to announce that Kristina Andabak, the creator of Grimmheim, took first place!

Huge congratulations to Kristina for this incredible achievement!

What’s the DoKomi Doujinshi Competition?

DoKomi is Germany’s largest manga convention, drawing over 200,000 visitors this year alone. Every year, the event holds its signature Doujinshi Contest, inviting artists to create a 4-page manga on a specific theme.

This year’s theme? Okinawa.

Artists were tasked with interpreting the theme creatively—whether through short stories involving their experience at DoKomi, or featuring DoKomi’s official mascots. The winners were announced and celebrated on the convention’s Black Stage, with their works exhibited for thousands to see.

And yes—Kristina’s winning entry was front and center!

From Kristina Herself:

“Being recognized feels incredible! I’m thrilled my work connected with the judges, and this fuels my drive to keep pushing forward. Excited to share everything I have in store!”

We’re incredibly proud of Kristina and this well-deserved win—it’s just one more example of the creative powerhouse we have at Saturday AM.

We come together today to celebrate the importance of Black history and honor Juneteenth—the day that marked the effective end of slavery in the United States.

While the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the proclamation and ensure the freedom of enslaved African Americans in one of the last holdout states. This day, now recognized as a federal holiday, stands as a powerful reminder of resilience, liberation, and the ongoing journey toward equality.

At Saturday AM, we proudly stand for diversity and the elevation of voices from all communities of color. And today, we want to spotlight our Black and Brown creators and characters who continue to inspire and empower through storytelling.

We’re excited to share a special Juneteenth illustration by our very own Morganne Walker, creator of Soul Beat. This piece features Dante from Soul Beat, Karim from Underground, and Aboki from Orisha—all repping for Juneteenth in bold red, green, and yellow. Pure fire!

If you’ve been with us for a while, you might remember Morganne’s Juneteenth artwork from 2023. Check out that post here:
👉 Happy Juneteenth – 2023 Post

Get to know the stories featured in this year’s art:

Soul Beat Vol. 1

Dante Alfonse is a promising boxer who’s more than capable of taking on any opponent, inside or outside of the ring. Whether it’s a bully in his neighborhood or even stopping a robbery, he’s quick to step in and hold down his city. Of course, when your name means “to endure,” being an unstoppable force for good comes naturally! But sometimes, good deeds attract unwanted attention…

Underground Vol. 1

Seeking revenge against the violent gang who attacked him and ended his Olympic dreams, he’s determined to battle every colorful combatant in his path.

His only obstacle is the illness brought about by the violent attack, which could kill Karim if he becomes too reckless—serving as his conscience is his nurse, who is trying to push him into changing his lifestyle but is learning more about the danger and the allure of secret mixed martial arts contests.

Orisha Vol. 1

When Aboki gains a seed, he is reluctant to use the power at all. As he builds alliances with loyal companions, Aboki must also prevent those who wish to use his new Orisha powers for their own conquests. But can he trust everyone around him? Will his happy outlook on life be ruined by a gnawing cynicism that humankind is inherently corrupt?

Happy Juneteenth from all of us at Saturday AM!

Explore these stories and more from our incredible lineup of diverse creators. Representation isn’t just a trend—it’s the foundation of what we do.

We’re back at Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF), the city’s number one celebration of independent comics! This annual two-day festival, held in downtown Toronto since 2003, is one of the most unique events of its kind — welcoming over 28,000 local and international visitors and featuring more than 315 artists from around the world.

What makes TCAF truly special is its ongoing commitment to accessibility and independent arts culture. It remains a completely free, non-commercial public arts and cultural festival — something rare in today’s landscape.

Representing Saturday AM this year was none other than Austin Harvey-Younis, our Editor in Chief! You might remember his visit last year alongside Gunhild creator Fred Tornager. (If not, check out our previous coverage here).

This time, Austin flew solo dolo — but still had an absolute blast.

He was even invited to participate in the LED (Libraries & Education Day) and its Manga 101 panel!

A Look at LED: Libraries & Education Day

A staple of TCAF, Libraries & Education Day 2025 brought together a dynamic mix of educators, librarians, academics, and comic lovers. Think of it as a meeting point for K–16 education and GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) institutions.

This year focused on graphic medicine, comics as cultural heritage, and thoughtful discussions around collection development, readers’ advisory, and comics advocacy.

Comics are an incredibly interdisciplinary medium, and LED creates the perfect space for conversations that connect higher ed, K–12, public libraries, and GLAM communities.

Austin’s Experience

Needless to say, it was an action-packed, inspiring day — filled with engaging conversations, passionate fans, and unforgettable moments with the Saturday AM community.

Here’s what Austin had to say:

“TCAF truly is something special. Creators, Educators, Librarians – all of these comic lovers come together to celebrate the greatness that is comics! The best part about it? It’s FREE!”

Couldn’t Make It to TCAF? No Worries.
