The time has finally come! Unsurprisingly, the hit manga series Dan Da Dan is getting its very own anime adaptation—and it’s coming next month! That’s right, the story of young love, occult battles, and everything in between kicks off in Dan Da Dan starting October 3rd.
For those unfamiliar, Dan Da Dan follows the exciting journey of Momo and Okarun, two teens whose beliefs clash and catapult them into a world filled with ghosts, aliens, and unexpected, awakened powers.
I was lucky enough to snag tickets to a special pre-screening of the first three episodes. Before I jump into my review, let me just say—there’s nothing like experiencing anime on the big screen. Sitting alongside fellow fans, reacting to the epic action sequences and laugh-out-loud moments, it’s a vibe like no other.
The screening opened with a behind-the-scenes interview featuring creator Yukinobu Tatsu, his editor Shihei Rin, anime director Fûga Yamashiro, and the voices behind the lead characters, Shion Wakayama and Natsuki Hanae. The interview offered a fascinating look into the creative process behind the series and how they approached the anime adaptation to ensure it was something Yukinobu Tatsu could be proud of. Most importantly it showed the dedication and excitement shared amongst all of them!
Now, let’s dive into my thoughts on the episodes themselves. Spoiler alert: I loved it!
Already caught up with the manga, I knew to expect fast pacing, and the adaptation did not disappoint. Studio Science Saru, also behind the recent Scott Pilgrim anime, put there whole foot in this one. From the jaw-dropping action sequences to the perfectly timed comedy, every moment felt like a love letter to fans of the original series. And don’t even get me started on the horror elements—capturing that kind of intensity in anime is tough, just ask Junji Ito, no shade!
The Japanese voice actors did an incredible job bringing Momo and Okarun to life. Momo, the tough gyaru with a soft side, and Okarun, the nerdy loner with hidden courage, have amazing on-screen chemistry. Their personalities shine, making you root for their evolving relationship and budding romance.
This genre-bending anime is already setting a high bar for the fall season. With its official release on both Netflix and Crunchyroll on October 3rd, and weekly episodes to follow, I can’t wait to see where the series goes next.
